About BVD Testing

Dairy One offers BVD testing for cows using blood samples, ear notch samples, bulk tank samples, or individual DHIA samples. Blood samples and ear notch samples are tested in-house at Dairy One’s Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory. Milk sample analysis is performed through Cornell University’s Animal Health Diagnostic Center or through Antel Bio.

How does it work?
Developed by IDEXX Laboratories, one of the world’s leading diagnostic testing manufacturers, the test works by the presence of antibodies associated with the disease; it does not test directly for the disease itself. Antibodies are produced by the cow as an immune response to the presence of the disease.

What animals are eligible for this test?

  • Calves that are pre-colostral or more than 3 months old can be tested using a blood sample
  • Any cow can be tested using milk or ear notches
  • The best time for testing is immediately after a calf is born

How do I receive results?
All results are sent via US Postal Service. We will send results via e-mail if an e-mail address is provided. Results are also automatically downloaded to Dairy Comp. We do not send results to Veterinarians unless their e-mail address is included on the paperwork.

When can I expect to receive results?
Depending on sample volume, your results may be available 1-3 business days after arriving at the Animal Health Diagnostics Lab. If you need your results sooner, please let us know, as we may be able to accommodate your request.

If you do not receive your results, please contact us via phone Monday through Friday, 8:00 am through 4:00 pm, at 800.344.2697, ext 6 or via e-mail at ahd@dairyone.com. We may have an incorrect mailing address or e-mail address on file.

How do I interpret the results?
A “Positive” result indicates that the animal has produced antibodies associated with BVD. A “Negative” results indicates that the animal has not produced these antibodies. Due to the nature of the antibody test, it is recommended that an animal that has tested positive once be retested to ensure that the antibodies are present from the contraction of the disease, as opposed to exposure which did not result in contraction of the disease. It is recommended to take a retest sample at least 3 weeks after the initial positive sample.

What is the cost per test?

  • $6.00 per blood or ear notch sample processed in-house
  • $60.00 per bulk tank sample processed through Cornell University
  • $45.00 plus shipping per bulk tank sample processed through Antel Bio
  • $6.00 plus shipping per individual DHIA cow sample processed through Antel Bio
